Tucson Regional Educators Collaborative

The Tucson Regional Educators Collaborative is led by the UA College of Education, nine regional school districts, several charter schools, and 12 community organizations and governmental agencies to support the region’s teachers. The collaborative began as an idea by UA College of Education Dean Bruce Johnson, former Dean Ron Marx, and Carrie Brennan of the CITY Center for Collaborative Learning and was made possible thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona.

TREC aims to leverage the resources found in the Southern Arizona region to support teachers in their professional goals. Goals of the collaborative include building professional development capacity, increasing teacher retention, and developing teacher leaders. Specifically, TREC will facilitate teacher learning and leadership efforts at the local and regional levels by:

  1. Raising the visibility of and providing greater access to high quality professional development activities offered in the greater Tucson area
  2. Supporting early childhood through grade 12 educators (classroom teachers, counselors, specialists, etc.) in finding the best matches for their learning needs
  3. Supporting connections and community building for educators across the region
  4. Creating new professional learning and leadership opportunities when needs are currently not being met

TREC is currently in its first year of a two-year building capacity phase. The current goals are to establish a sustainable infrastructure, support the development of teacher fellows, host three one-day retreats, pilot teacher leaders, and host summer institutes. Aligned with these goals, TREC recently launched trecarizona.org to highlight available local professional learning opportunities. The website will also soon include resources related to the needs of local educators and will also serve as an online networking tool to strengthen community-building opportunities.
