Writing a Thank You Letter to Your Scholarship Donor

College of Education scholarships are supported by generous donors who care about our students and education. These donors appreciate interaction with current scholarship recipients. With that in mind, we ask that you write a thank you letter to the donor who made your scholarship possible. Failure to do so may limit your consideration for a future award.

* Thank you letters must be submitted through Scholarship Universe unless otherwise instructed.

Format & Mechanics:
Please construct a thoughtful, professional thank you letter with your signature on the bottom.

Follow these guidelines as an example on how to craft your letter:

Dear [Insert Donor’s Name],

Paragraph 1: Initial Thank You
This section's purpose is to directly thank the donor or organization. Refer to the scholarship by its name as shown in your award letter. Do not mention the amount being awarded. Examples: "Thank you so much for your generosity." "It is an honor to be chosen for the ... Scholarship."

Paragraph 2: A Little About Yourself
This section's purpose is to provide information on who you are. Provide general information about yourself that could include:

  • who you are and where you are from
  • why you chose the U of A and your field of study
  • major, GPA, year of study (junior, graduate, etc.)
  • your campus and community involvement as well as academic and extracurricular activities
  • something that distinguishes you

Paragraph 3: Personalized Information
This section's purpose is to provide your donor with more personalized information about your unique academic pursuits including:

  • volunteer experience, research, internships,
  • a description of how being a student at the U of A is impacting your life and what you enjoy most
  • let your donor know how this scholarship has helped to further your education and accomplish your academic goals
  • future plans and passions such as academic and career goals

Paragraph 4: Closing
This section's purpose is to restate your appreciation for the donor's contribution to your future and to thank them for their generosity.

Closing,

  • (Examples: Sincerely, Best, Best Regards, With Gratitude, Gratefully Yours, With Appreciation) Or any other appropriate (formal) sign-off. Be sure to include a comma after your closing.
